Practical Training Experience Report, Adra Romania

by Vida Owusu Agyemang

M.A. Student in Development Studies, Friedensau Adventist University, Germany.

As a student pursuing a master’s degree in development studies at Friedensau Adventist University, Germany, I recently had the privilege of completing a two-month internship with ADRA Romania, from June 4th to August 7th, 2024. This experience was made possible through the generous support of the Erasmus program, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Erasmus office at Friedensau Adventist University for their unwavering support throughout this journey. My time with ADRA Romania has fulfilled a long-held aspiration to gain professional experience within a European organization and offered profound insights that will shape my future career in development work.

The preparatory phase also included several interviews with my supervisor and lecturer, where we clarified expectations, discussed specific responsibilities, and addressed logistical concerns such as accommodation. Initially, I was apprehensive about potential language barriers and the geopolitical context, given Romania’s proximity to Ukraine. However, my supervisor’s reassurance encouraged me to focus on the work ahead with a clear mind.

ADRA Romania, established in 1990, has evolved from its initial focus on transporting food and clothing to those in need to a robust humanitarian organization with a diverse portfolio of projects. The organization’s mission is to bring positive change to the lives of its beneficiaries, regardless of religious affiliation, through partnerships with state institutions and non-governmental organizations. Adra Romania has good initiatives that span economic development, basic education, health, disaster relief, and support for socially disadvantaged groups, with a notable emphasis on victims of domestic violence.

During my internship, I was deeply involved with the "Casa ADRA" project—a shelter that provides emergency assistance to victims of domestic violence, particularly gender-based violence. This project is a cornerstone of ADRA Romania’s mission to support individuals who have suffered various forms of abuse, including social, financial, physical, psychological, and emotional violence.

My role at Casa ADRA was multifaceted, allowing me to engage with different aspects of the organization’s operations. I worked closely with a dedicated team of social workers, psychologists, and the project manager. From the social assistance team, I gained hands-on experience in sociological counseling, learned the procedures for admitting beneficiaries to the shelter, and conducted initial evaluations for those receiving protection orders. I also did some administrative tasks, such as issuing weekly vouchers to beneficiaries and organizing statistical data. This immersion into the practical aspects of social work was eye-opening, as it provided me with a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in supporting survivors of domestic abuse.

I also had the opportunity to collaborate with the project manager on writing project proposals and organizing fundraising activities. These tasks boosted my skills in communication, strategic thinking, and resource mobilization, all of which are crucial for my future career in development studies. Additionally, I gained valuable experience in psychotherapy techniques that are instrumental in helping beneficiaries cope with emotional pain, fear, and anxiety, fostering better healing outcomes. Through these counseling sessions, I developed a deeper understanding of how to create a safe and supportive environment where survivors can freely express their feelings, thoughts, and fears.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my internship was designing strategic counseling and recreational activities for the children of the shelter’s beneficiaries. This experience was particularly fulfilling as it allowed me to contribute creatively to the well-being of these children, offering them moments of joy and hope amidst their challenging circumstances.

My two-month internship with ADRA Romania was a transformative experience that has significantly shaped my perspective on development work. I am deeply grateful to ADRA Romania for the opportunity to contribute to their mission and the Erasmus program, Friedensau Adventist University for making this experience possible. As I reflect on my time at Casa ADRA, I am filled with a sense of purpose and determination to continue working towards positive change in the lives of those who are most in need. This internship has been more than just a professional milestone; it has been a journey of personal growth and discovery. The knowledge and experience I have gained will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors, and I am excited to apply what I have learned as I continue my studies and embark on my career in development.

Finally, this report is intended not only as an account of my internship experience but also as a testament to the transformative power of opportunities like these. I hope it serves as an encouragement to other students, the internship office, and donors, emphasizing the profound impact such experiences can have on both professional development and personal growth. Thank you.
