On the way to a family-friendly university

Family and university are not contradictory at the ThHF. To ensure that neither studies nor the family suffer, the ThHF has committed to providing more family-friendly services for students and employees with children.

A daycare center on the university campus

For years, many students and employees of the university with small children had a dream: a daycare center (KiTa) on the university campus. Despite many initiatives (toddler groups, playgroups, helping each other out with childcare, etc.) and discussions with those responsible, it remained a dream for many years, but since October 2008 there now exists a communal daycare center with a Christian concept on the university campus.

The university agreed with the town of Möckern that the KiTa Friedensau would not only implement Saxony-Anhalt's KiTa education program “Bildung elementar - Bildung von Anfang an”, but would also base its educational work on Christian values and beliefs. For example, prayer, using the Bible, faith in creation, celebrating Christian festivals and an awareness of healthy eating are integral parts of the educational work. In addition, Friedensau's idyllic location, the beautiful children's playgrounds on campus and the university's gymnasium invite students to get active and exercise close to nature. A holistic approach is also a central concept of the KiTa in its educational work with the children. This is complemented by the tasty vegetarian food from the university canteen.

For Friedensau Adventist University, the opening of the daycare in Friedensau is an important step on the way to becoming a child-friendly university, as the ministries of Saxony-Anhalt would like to see for all universities in the state. Studying with children should not remain a fantasy for students, but a real possibility to shape their own future.

Family-friendly work opportunities on campus

Providing financially for living expenses and tuition fees is certainly often a challenging task for students with children. This is where the university wants to be supportive. There are work opportunities on campus, some of which offer very flexible, family-friendly working hours. Of course, in certain areas the working hours are dictated by the work processes, but in other areas students can organise their part-time student activities extremely flexibly. This is very convenient for students with children.

Jens Schwenger is the contact person for questions regarding part-time student jobs on campus. It is advisable to point out the special nature of studying with children during an initial discussion about work opportunities on campus.
