“The Messiah” – performance of the oratorio on 17 June 2023 in the Arena Friedensau
17. Mar. 2023 / Events
One of the world's most popular choral pieces certainly is the "Hallelujah" from Georg Friedrich Händel's oratorio "The Messiah". This ingenious work for solos, choir and orchestra never ceases to inspire. In view of the compositional complexity, but also the enormous power inherent in Händel's music, one would hardly think it possible that this great work was composed at a time of deepest personal crisis for its composer.
Music leads to the centre of Christian faith
After a good two years of choir abstinence due to the pandemic, the oratorio (HWV 56 - for solos, choir and orchestra) is to be performed in 2023 in the Arena Friedensau with outstanding soloists, a large choir of 115 singers - the Mitteldeutsche Motettenchor and the LandesChor der Adventgemeinde in Berlin-Mitteldeutschland - as well as a chamber orchestra directed by Wilfried Scheel.
The theological and musical preoccupation with this work leads to the centre of Christian faith. For Georg Friedrich Händel, composing "The Messiah" was like an encounter with God. He created a work that can touch musicians and listeners alike and deepen faith in Jesus Christ.
Singers experience the blessing of music
"The oratorio "'The Messiah' by Händel is a great work for me and singing along with the choirs is a vocal highlight. It is a communal praise that still resonates in everyday life, gives me joy and strength and makes me feel God's presence. I am grateful for this piece of heaven" (Dr. Ina Heidrich, choir singer from Jena).
"I am very happy to be part of the 'Messiah' choir project. I have missed singing in a large choir for a long time. I enjoy this common sound of jubilation, sermon, praise of God, soft tones and grand finale. For me it is both: highly concentrated attention and at the same time relaxed enthusiasm. I wish everyone could experience that. The joyful community togetherness in the breaks is also good for everyone. Last but not least: They say that singing together connects generations. In my case, it's very special: my father and sister sang 'The Messiah' enthusiastically, and so did I many years ago. Now I'm singing again from the tattered family sheet music from back then, and yet I'm surprised every time how up-to-date-timeless the message is. The Messiah is a piece of eternity" (Pastor Stefan Filter, choir singer from Plauen).
