Scientific conference

15. Jul. 2024 / Science & Research

The 5th Symposium of the Institute for Adventist History and Theology took place in Friedensau from April 15 to 18, 2024. The theme was "Adventism and the Anabaptists". The speakers came mainly from Germany and the USA as well as Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia and the Czech Republic. Looking back, the two organizers and moderators, Dr. Johannes Hartlapp and Prof. Stefan Höschele, confirmed an extraordinarily successful conference and concluded that "the influences of Anabaptist churches on Seventh-day Adventists are indirect, but diverse and remarkable. Adventists are often closer to Mennonites in particular than representatives of both churches realize – both in terms of ethics and lifestyle as well as with regard to their understanding of education, church life, and many theological convictions. Due to their historical experiences of persecution and forced migration, Anabaptist churches earn the greatest possible respect from Adventists, especially since in some regions (historically especially in Russia) many Adventists originally came from Anabaptist backgrounds. Themes in which the Seventh-day Adventist Church can learn from the history of the Anabaptists are their dedication to peacemaking and the commitment to religious freedom coupled with a willingness to accept martyrdom.”

It is planned to publish the 16 papers in a conference volume, which is due to appear in 2024.

The Institute for Adventist History and Theology at Friedensau Adventist University is dedicated to the historical and denominational study of Adventism and its related movements. It is the only academic institution of its kind in Europe. https://www.thh-friedensau.de/ias-symposium-2024
